Expanding Our Surface Preparation Capabilities with Automated Shot Blasting

Powder Coatings of Utah has expanded its surface preparation capabilities with an automated shot blasting system, now installed and ready for customer projects at our Ogden facility. This investment strengthens an important part of our metal finishing process: preparing steel surfaces before powder coating or liquid coating.
For manufacturers and fabricators across Utah and the Intermountain West, it means another preparation option backed by a team that considers the requirements of the complete finishing project.

What does automated shot blasting do?
Shot blasting uses steel shot propelled against a metal surface to remove rust, mill scale, and other surface debris. Our system moves parts through an enclosed blast chamber on a roller conveyor, where rotating blast wheels direct the shot onto exposed surfaces.
Adjustable settings help control the cleaning process for different project requirements. After blasting, parts can proceed to the appropriate additional preparation and coating steps.
Why surface preparation matters
A protective coating depends on the condition of the surface beneath it. Rust and mill scale can interfere with adhesion, so removing them is an important step toward a sound foundation for the finish.
Automated shot blasting supports controlled, repeatable preparation of suitable steel parts. It complements our existing finishing capabilities and helps us coordinate the work from surface preparation through powder coating or liquid coating.

Continued investment in serving our customers
Adding this equipment reflects our commitment to strengthening the processes behind every finish. We continue to invest in capabilities that help us respond to customer needs while maintaining a focus on quality, consistency, and practical project support.
Every job starts with understanding the parts and the desired result. Our team reviews material, dimensions, geometry, surface condition, and finishing requirements to determine the appropriate preparation method.
